Dear 4-312 Families,
Welcome back to PS 87! We are very excited about the new school year and are looking forward to working with each and every one of you.
We are thrilled to be teaching in an ICT (Integrated Co-Teaching) classroom this year. Laura Tepper serves as the general education teacher and Robyn Kurzrok as the special education teacher. As co-teachers, we collaborate together to support all of the students in 4-312 and will each get to know your child on an individual level. One of the wonderful benefits of the ICT model is all students receive more individualized attention to help them succeed and thrive. We are also fortunate to have Maha, a dedicated and experienced paraprofessional, in our classroom this year as part of our educational team.
We look forward to meeting you on Monday, September 17, from 7pm-8pm at our Curriculum Night. Until then, we have prepared some essential information for you to review to kick off a wonderful 4th grade year.

If there is something we should know about your child or if you have a question, please send a note with your child to school to be placed in our bin marked “Notes for Teachers.”
Arrival
School begins at 8:20am. It is very important for your child to come to school on time. Please use the main entrance on 78th Street. We will meet the class in the auditorium. Students will be marked late if they arrive in the classroom after we are there with the rest of the class.
Dismissal
Dismissal is at 2:40pm in the Big Yard. At dismissal, the whole class will line up together at spot GG. Once we are in line, we will begin dismissing students one at a time. Each child should say goodbye by giving either (or both) Robyn or Laura a “high five,” so that it is clear to us who was dismissed. Children who have not been picked up will wait in the "late room" in the same wing as the main office.
Please remind your child in the morning about dismissal/after-school plans. If you have made special dismissal arrangements for a particular day, please let us know by sending in a handwritten note. Since we do not check our email during the school day, please do not email the class parents requesting they contact us. If there are last-minute dismissal changes, please email Emily Paxinos at epaxino@schools.nyc.gov.
Snack
In an effort to keep everyone in class healthy, students should wash their hands at the sink or use antibacterial gel before eating.
Since our 4th grade lunch period is so late in the day (1:10-1:45pm), we feel it is important that the children have a light snack mid-morning to refuel and keep focused. Please make sure that your child has a snack every day, labeled with his or her name. Your child’s snack must be nutritious and in an amount your child can eat in about 10 minutes. Good choices are fruit, cut-up vegetables, crackers, granola bars, and cheese sticks. Please do not send candy, chips, soda, or other such treats. Additionally, due to allergies in class, please do not send your child with powdered cheese snacks (e.g. Goldfish, Cheez-Its, etc.).
Birthdays
If your child wishes to celebrate his or her birthday in school, cupcakes, brownies, and cookies are great dessert options. Please make sure the birthday treat is already separated into equal parts. If you would like to include a drink, it must be in the form of individual boxes or pouches. We do not hold birthday celebrations with cake, candles, goody bags, etc. Please let us know in advance if you would like to plan a special treat for your child’s birthday. The snack may be dropped off in the morning and the birthday child will serve it at the end of the school day. Unfortunately, parents and family members cannot join us for birthdays.
Health Issues
It is important to let us know as soon as possible if your child has allergies, asthma, or other health issues.
Please complete the attached forms and return by Wednesday, September 12.
We are excited to get started with this terrific group of children, and we are confident that together we will have a fun and productive year!
